Travel & Working / Pet Passports

Travelling with a cat or dog is now much easier with the new EU pet passport available from any vet.

The pet passport scheme was brought in to limit the number of animals enduring lengthy spells in quarantine. It also allows the authorities to track exactly where an animal has come from, so they can be sure it’s healthy and establish how far it has been transported, which is key to stopping outbreaks of periodic and established diseases.

All cats and dogs must have a passport containing details of a valid rabies vaccination.

In addition, treatment for ticks and tapeworm is required for entry into Ireland & Malta, and for returning to the UK, whilst Finland and Sweden only require tapeworm treatment. From 1 January 2012, pets entering the UK, Ireland and Malta will only require tapeworm treatment.

An animal has to be identified by an electronic microchip.
