Frequent passport checks used to be a pain when travelling around continental Europe.

However, 25 countries in Europe (including Switzerland and EEA members Norway and Iceland) have signed up to a scheme known as the Schengen Agreement, which allows travellers to move from state to state without the need for passport checks.

The UK is not a full member of the agreement, so UK travellers will have to show their passports when entering the Schengen region, but once inside, you’re generally free to move from one country to another without passport control or customs checks.
