Food & Environment / Hazardous Waste

The chemicals industry is the third largest manufacturing branch in the EU and in the UK the products of this industry can be found in every area of our lives – from medicines to housing, transport and communications.

However, as the industry sees continued growth, we need to be aware of the risks it can pose to human health and the environment.

In the past few years, the incidence of allergies, asthma, some types of cancer and reproductive disorders in Europe are on the increase.  Chemicals may be one of the causes for this trend, but we know very little about 99% of them and their effects, uses and safe handling.

Companies have to show that the substances they sell or manufacture are safe under  rules, known by the acronym “REACH” (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical Substances) which make chemical risk-assessment the responsibility of the manufacturer.
