In June 2006 the Cornwall Council produced a major development strategy for Newquay Cornwall Airport that dealt with its structural and sustainability issues. The project was approved funding from the European Development Fund, national sources and also the Council’s own borrowings. Without investment, it would have been forced to close drastically reducing Cornwall’s connectivity and ability to deliver wider economic programmes.
Part of the project included the purchase of the adjacent RAF St Mawgan airfield and the implementation of a series of infrastructure works to ensure its transition from military airfield to fully operational civil airport.
The project’s other main aim was to develop and extend the airport’s capacity and facilities – this included extensions to the departure and arrivals lounges, the purchase of operational equipment, additional car parking areas, amongst others.
The development strategy is still in operation – the airport intends to break even by 2013 and achieve long term commercial sustainability thereafter, providing the far South West with a modern, safe and commercially successful airport.
