The Merseyside Objective 1 Programme invested £1.7 million of EU funding in a £4.8 million project to create a new gateway into St Helens town centre. This formed part of larger regeneration programme across the town which aimed to establish St Helens as a cultural and tourist hotspot.

The project included the design of a stylish new two-storey building with a glass façade and iconic copper clad tower, designed to fit in with the surrounding cultural quarter. It also upgraded the station’s platform, waiting room and access facilities.
