The EU contributed to the refurbishment of the John Rylands University library. The refurbishment includes the extensive cleaning of the stonework of the old building, the removal, cleaning and replacement piece by piece, of the stained glass in the great windows of the historic reading room, the addition of a pitched roof to aid drainage and prevent water ingress and, perhaps most importantly from a community perspective, the installation of superb new exhibition facilities, including an interactive gallery.
The new entrance wing includes a café and a book gift shop, new toilets, a Special Collections reading room for people working on their historic collections and a new Conservation Studio. The floors in between contain secure and fully environmentally controlled book stacks for the storage of collections when not in use.
