Alnwick Garden was envisioned by the Duchess of Northumberland, the funding trustee of the Alnwick Garden Trust. The Garden includes areas of fascinating plants, water sculptures, the infamous Poison Garden and one of the world’s largest wooden tree houses. In summer, the Garden’s green landscape becomes a backdrop for more than 3000 roses, giant delphiniuniums and extravagant herbaceous borders.

Ten years ago, The Alnwick Garden site was derelict. Then the Duchess of Northumberland imagined creating a beautiful public garden for families to enjoy. The EU has played a key role in the economic renaissance and cultural development across the North East.  The first phase of The Garden opened in 2001 with the Grand Cascade, the Rose Garden and the Ornamental Garden. The Alnwick Garden opened its second phase of development in 2005, which included one of the largest wooden tree houses in the world, the Poison Garden, Bamboo Labyrinth and Serpent Garden.

The project has had a major effect on Alnwick and North East England with a number of key outputs coming from the project including 680 jobs and 250,000 learning opportunities.
