Youngsters from across Europe met in North Tyneside to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.Students from a number of the North Tyneside’s high schools took part in North Tyneside Council’s Friendship Games with their European counterparts.

Around 100 young people from Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and France joined 20 pupils from Longbenton Community College, Whitley Bay High School, Churchill Community College and Burnside Enterprise College, in a weekend of sports and cultural activities.

With the support of the European Union’s Europe for Citizens Programme and the council’s Widening Horizons for All programme, the games provided an opportunity to bring together young people and their dignitaries from twin towns across Europe.

The friendship games are usually held in different countries every other year however, North Tyneside hosted an additional event to celebrate the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The young people took part in traditional Olympic events, based on the format of TV show ‘It’s a Knockout’. Events were themed around North East landmarks and include running, jumping and throwing.

As well as taking part in sporting events, the 16 to 19 year-olds also took part in a mayoral debate and other discussions at Whitley Bay PLAYHOUSE, centred on two European Union themes – the impact of volunteering and how to encourage over 50s to be more active in their own towns.
