The project works with young people aged 16-23 in order to help them pursue studies and careers in the creative industries in order to address the obstacles faced by both the young people and the industry. Greenwich Theatre and partners deliver a progression based, interlinked programme of activities. Specifically these are a full-time foundation course in Musical Theatre and performance (OCN Level 2 & 3), part-time workshops (Trinity Guildhall accredited) and one-day tasters through youth groups and existing links with schools in deprived parts of East London.
West End casting directors have confirmed a shortage of Black & Asian talent in the field of musical theatre and research has been undertaken into the involvement of black & ethnic minorities as arts professionals. The project aims to address this issue and get more young people from diverse backgrounds interested in drama and the performing arts.
The Greenwich Musical Theatre Academy is nationally unique, delivering high levels of tuition. All GMTA staff and tutors are musical theatre professionals working professionally in the industry as well as tutoring on the course. Students benefit from regular one-off workshops with guest lecturers and professionals alongside regular trips to the west-end to keep up to date with current trends in musical theatre.
